CARN0110.jpgAccording to historians, Portuguese navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral, after sailing through the open waters of the ocean, saw the mountain today's  Monte Pascoal  that showed them the way to the coast. Cabral discovered Brazil on April 22nd 1500, a couple of thousand years after the first Indians populated the country. Just north of Porto Seguro . the first mass was said. Porto Seguro, founded in 1526, has some claim to being the oldest town in Brazil, as buildings still survive from that period but today it is better known for being the youngest city in Brazil and the portal to the Discovery Coast.

This coastal section has 90km of beaches protected by coral reefs, rivers, streams, coconut groves and the lush "Mata Atlântica". The Discovery Coast has 27 beaches.

You can still find an ecological paradise that offers a mix of history, culture, art and natural wonders. You can also practice sports, try some good food, learn the "lambaeróbica" or simply relax, forget the day-to-day routine, sit back and think about nothing except the beautiful seascapes, blue skies and the sun that shines throughout the year.

If your main interest is nightlife, this is the place but you’ve got to not mind crowds. During the day, sleep late and go from beach to trekking in the forest; At night the action goes into the wee hours of the next morning at the coast with lots of live music, often by very good international bands, reggae music, parties and good vibes in restaurants and beach huts by the sea.

Porto Seguro’s modern action is centered in its Cidade Baixa (Lower City). The riverside Avenida 22 de Abril (April 22nd Ave.) and its continuation, Avenida Portugal, are a mass of bars, restaurants and hotels—so much so in fact that Portugal Avenue changes its name at night to become the Passarela do Álcool, “Alcohol Strip”. Competing stand sellers urge you to try their fiendishly strong cocktail called a capeta, a mixture of honey, lemon juice, and guaraná powder (a tropical fruit from the Amazon) with cachaça, the national hard liquor made from sugar cane.
 

 All the same, Porto Seguro has somehow managed to retain its reputation as a fairly classy destination. No structures are allowed to be taller than 25 feet and many stars such as Gilberto Gil and singer Gal Costa own beachside villas here.
 
The city has a wide variety of restaurant and fast food offering sophisticated dishes or a good and cheap meal.

ATTRACTIONS: Schooners leave daily to Recife de Fora, coral reefs that at low tide form pools with crystal-clear waters. Other popular options are an excursion up the Buranhém River or trips to Coroa Alta, Trancoso and Caraíva.

Where Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil,  landed in 1500: Just north of Porto Seguro on the road to Santa Cruz Cabrália is the site , marked by a cross. This is where the first Mass was said to have been celebrated in Brazil.
High on a bluff overlooking the town is the old section Cidade Alta of Porto Seguro where there are three colonial churches of note—Nosso Senhora da Misericórdia built in 1526, Nossa Senhora do Rosário in 1534 and Nossa Senhora da Pena, 1535, the latter which has the oldest religious icon in Brazil, a St. Francis of Assisi, brought over in the first serious expedition to Brazil in 1503

From the town northward are eight beautiful beaches for swimming, two of which are good for fishing—Taperapuã and Cruzeiro—and another one—Mundaí—is good for snorkeling. The beaches near the town are not wide and they do become packed with people.

 Porto Seguro is packed for Carnaval particularly at the beach with young people and easily would make most Brazilians list of a TOP 10 Brazil CARNAVAL

The Carnaval last for 7 days and features many top bands from Salvador performing on trio electricos (amplified band on a large sound truck with band members partying and dancing behind it.)
Brazilian and Argentine tourists who pack Porto Seguro throughout the year, make sure they return to thier favorite getaway for the year's all out celebration at Carnaval. (New Year's sell out too!)

Locals fondly remember the Carnaval in 1984 when the theme was the Adam and Eve story. Costumes were pretty skimpy to start with, then temptation won again at Carnaval time and everyone stripped as the script called for.

On the Sunday before Carnaval a beauty pageant is held at the Praia Hotel.

Cabrália is a tourism center with modern infrastructure and is rapidly developing further withdiscovery_coast.jpg  hotels and inns, restaurants, camping, tourism agencies, which provide boat trips, and bank branches.

The city is located between João de Tiba River and a natural sea barrier in the Cabrália bay.

After sighting land off Monte Pascoal in April 1500, Cabral and his men sailed three days up the coast to find a safe port. The Portuguese landed not at Porto Seguro (literally Safe Port), but 16 km further north, at Coroa Vermelha. The first Santa Cruz settlement  was founded by Pero do Campo Tourinho, and destroyed by the Aimoré Indians in 1564.

The present settlement starts in Cidade Alta, which offers a panoramic view of the region: at the bottom of the hill, in first plan, the city of Santa Cruz Cabrália; on the right, Coroa Vermelha; on the left, the beginning of APA Santo Antônio,

The Coroa Vermelha, place of celebration and landmark of the discovery, is on the right, very close to the  city. The place corresponds to the present Coroa Vermelha’s Pataxó Tribe Indian Reservation area.

Good area for fishing and maritime strolls. According to the magazine It  Santo André possess one of the 13 most beautiful & exotic beaches in Brazil. Although it’s still a somewhat isolated village, Santo André has been through many changes over the past two decades. Twenty years ago, it had 100 inhabitants, members of just four families. Now there are 750 inhabitants. People made a living with fishing, and today their livelihood depends on tourism. The children of former fishermen, for example, now manage schooners that take visitors on sightseeing trips that reveal many of the region’s natural beauties, such as the João de Tiba River itself, bordered by mangroves where many little blue herons and some great egrets can be seen, and coroas, structures made of sand and reefs typical of the region.

From high atop the cliff on which Arraial is located, there is a panoramic view of the Discovery Coast, and the town’s unique charm brings together people from all over the world, especially the international jet set, who have adopted Arraial as a home away from home.

Arraial D’Ajuda, lies on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in southern Bahia. Discovered by hippies in the early 70s, a post-Woodstock generation that traveled the world and found in Arraial an alternative way of living with new values. These same people are now the owners of the friendly, rustic inns that are so common in town, many of which were built as extensions of their own homes.

The streets of the town are unpaved, and lined with small, rustic inns and charming restaurants, that blend perfectly with the town’s carefree ambience. It’s as easy to find a Japanese sushi as it is to taste one of Bahia’s famous seafood stews known as moquecas. A pedestrian district known as “Broadway” is a must in Arraial with its many bars and restaurants where tables are set up right on the sidewalk. The variety of foods available is almost as great as the variety of music. 

The daily routine in Arraial is completely out of the ordinary. The shops only open at the end of the afternoon and close at about midnight. People dress very informally and it’s considered completely normal to go shopping in a bikini or even go out to a nightclub in swimwear. Lunch feels a lot like dinner, and just when you think the town is settling down for the night, the festivities are just beginning with luaus on the beach and dancing until the early hours of the morning.

GETTING THERE: Arraial d’Ajuda from Porto Seguro,
by ferry: you have to cross Buranhém River, in a ferry-boat for both automobiles and pedestrians, the trip takes about 10 minutes. Ferry-boat lines are open 24 hours a day;a ferry departs every 25 minutes from 7:00am to 10:00pm and every hour from 10:00pm to 7:00am. This is closest resort to Porto Seguro and the easiest to get to:
By car: After the crossing, you should take a paved road for 4 km, or if you prefer you can leave Porto Seguro and take the road BR-367, go on for 25 km to Eunápolis, until the road junction on the left side, with the road BA-001. Then, go ahead for 36 km until Arraial d’Ajuda.

"Ok, if you don't like alcohol, go with coconut water, very good in this places. If you want to go on carnival, you will have to make reservations at least 3 months before.

You won't find any luxury in this places. You must be prepared because the inns and restaurants are very simple. You won't find night clubs, but there are a lot of party, always outdoors. If you like comfort, is better go to Salvador, where you will find good hotels and restaurants

Trancoso is a beautiful transformed fishing village which lies on a grassy bluff overlooking the ocean and fantastic beaches. The historical central square, known as the Quadrado, is lined with small, colorful colonial buildings and casual bars and restaurants nestling under shady trees.

 GETTING THERE: You can get there either by bus (about five a day from Arraial d'Ajuda, taking fifty minutes) or on foot . It's a beautiful walk - 12km down the beach from Arraial - but you have to ford a couple of rivers so be prepared to get wet.

If you really want to get away from civilization in the southern part of Bahia, you have to go to CARAÍVA , which has no electricity apart from that provided by generators & solar energy Once there, you'll find superb beaches, a few rustic places to stay, some good food and plenty of peace and quiet.

Between Rio Caraíva and the ocean, Caraíva is a world apart. Before tourism the main industry was the production of lumber which was destroyed in an explosion in 1948.

ATTRACTIONS
Only 6 Km from an Indian reserve (Pataxós Indians) in the Monte Pascoal National Park. This is very close to where Pedro Álvares Cabral first stepped foot

Ponta do Corumbau -(13 km) a fishermen's village with a light at the end of the beach. Traveling by boat one an hour and a half of lush scenery,

Rio Caraíva -  canoe, kayak or by boat for miles. Passing through forests and manguesais. It is possible to rent a motor boat for up to six people.

Boat Trips - there are two types of boat trips one can take. Either taking a fishing boat (up to 12 people), if you desire to go out in the ocean or a small motor boat or canoe up the river.

Horseback Riding - ride a horse through the Indian reserve, the forests or along the beach,

Beaches near and at Caraíva:
•Curuípe(12 km north ), An isolated beach, with shady Amendoeira trees, •Espelho - (9 km north) A beach of coral reefs, half way between caraíva and Coruípe
• Juacema (or Satu) (3.5 km north) - swimming, fresh water lagoons nearby & small coconut plantation
• Caraíva at Caraíva - swimming, snorkeling offshore at Pedra de Tatuaçu reef, rus-tic village at mouth of Caraíva River
• Barra Velha (6km south) - swimming, Pataxó Indian village inside Monte Pascoal National Park fronting beach Indians sell crafts such as beautiful bowls, necklaces and combs, made of native woods
•Tatuaçu - A large rock formation great for diving located 15 minutes by boat from Caraíva

GETTING THERE: It's time-consuming to get to: there are boats from Porto Seguro (consult a travel agent) and Trancoso which take four and two hours respectively, and two buses a day from Trancoso - a bumpy ride, ending with a boat journey across a river.

BR 101 going north on the highway 101, you will pass by Itamaraju and Monte Pascoal until you get to the 753-Km marker and then enter to your right. (Fill up the tank before you enter the dirt road). When the weather is good; it will take you approximately 2 hours. Try to get there before dark. When you get to Caraíva, follow the signs to the parking lot, leave your car there and cross the river by canoe. caraiva.com.br/
