The festival grounds will offer exciting events planned for the whole family, from children activities, to local visual artists displaying their art, to contingent artists performing at several stages, and many local businesses given an opportunity to participate as well. There will be music on three stages and through the 5 block long 2-day festival, ethnic food, art and lots of fun to be had by all.

Carnaval Parade begins at 24th & Bryant (HQ tent for Photo Passes here) at 10am and dances its way down Mission to 17th street where it will turn towards the festival on Harrison. Carnaval is produced by  Mission Neighborhood Centers
The 2 mile route has few gaps at the start on 24th and some big ones toward the end of the parade on the end of the parade route. Makes for good opportunities to support the local merchants. ( Carnaval.com is not the official web site if you can believe that) 
Tickets Now on Sale for Grandstand Seating across from New Mission Theater on Mission between 21st and 22nd streets. Best seat in house next to judges & media with  MC Joan Savoury to enliven the action.

Carnaval 2001 King Theolonius I & Queen Elizabeth in 2002
The stars shine bright for the two monarchs of technically the first Carnaval of the millennium. Theolonius is not only an amazing dancer but also the best Master of Ceremonies Carnaval San Francisco has ever had. The MC regaled all at the King and Queen contest with fancy footwork and gift for gab. Meanwhile the best event anyone can remember was produced by Elizabeth as 22 very talented dancers and larger than life personalities competed in smooth harmony for a small slice of immortality at the 2002 King & Queen contest.   Top

Prize Monies are an important part of the Contingent Assistance Fund which has also given grants of $500 to $2000 to over half the groups in the parade. Three Grand Prizes will be awarded on a merit basis to those contingents that best exemplify the artistic criteria and categories of the parade.

Best of Carnaval on the web
In 2001 Saint Petersburg Russia is hosting the global Carnaval FECC convention. Russia was the last country in Europe to communicate primarily using the written word. In other words the Carnaval language of images communicated through song dance and story a  natural inclination. Many new yet old Carnivals www.carnival.ru have sprung up but none is more ambitious than St. Petersburg. Odessa Pegus of Oakland will be leading our San Francisco delegation to the 2001 World Carnaval convention there from May 27th to June 3rd in the czar castle City of Puskin. This city was named after inspiredsfmission/sfbirthplace figure of Alexander Puskin whose grand father was from Africa and is considered the father of both Russian literacy and literature. The imperial Russian ambition for California was most responsible for the founding Mission Dolores on June 29, 1776  Many Russians are familiar with the true love story set in the Presidio which came very close to altered our Spanish Mission influenced California culture.
