This easternmost island of the Caribbean is surrounded by coral reefs which give its beaches brilliant colors. The pounding, pulsating surf of the Atlantic Ocean on the less developed rocky east coast is a pleasant contrast to the many beautiful white sandy beaches found on the calm, clear Caribbean side where the south coast is known for its nightlife and the west coast offers a large expanse of public beaches lined with luxury resorts.

The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown. Founded in 1628, its long history is closely tied to England's fortunes in the Caribbean. The British flavor adds a sophisticated air as you decide between afternoon tea or watching the popular West Indies game of cricket. The population of 264,000 is well-educated (99% literacy) and economically astute. They maintain one of the most efficient and ambitious governments in the Caribbean. Bajans live on an island 14 miles wide and 21 miles long, or about 166 square miles. These people work hard and they play hard especially at CROP OVER time.

Barbados features many excellent restaurants and top chefs. You can expect to be asked to dress up and make reservations at many of these finer establishments. However, Barbados offers a wide variety capable of suiting all tastes and budgets.
There is a Bajan cuisine featuring local seafood like flying fish, lobster, crane chubb and sea urchin. Nearby farms produce sweet potatoes, yams, plantains, breadfruit, avocados, pears, bananas, soursops, pawpaws, figs and coconuts. Cou cou, made from mashing cornmeal and okra together, is considered a national dish, but the centerpiece of the seafood cuisine is the flying fish. Roti, the Caribbean version of the burrito or wraps, is also popular.
