The São Paulo carnival may not have Rio's
reputation and popularity, but its a big city Brazilian Carnaval
as 350 thousand Brazilian visitors come to dance
to the sound of São Paulo
 drums.
Most of them from the interior of Sao Paulo and the nearby
states of Parana and Minas Gerais.
The city's samba schools perform all night in the Sambadrome,
competing for the much-coveted samba award.
The festival takes place over a weekend, and in
the fortnight leading up to the event further music and dancing
takes place in the Sambadrome for free. Much of the population
has taken advantage of the Carnaval weekend so there's a chance
to appreciate the city without the hassle of the crowds and
share the City's largest annual event with the proud Paulistas.

Rehearsals- |
-For
those in São Paulo in the months leading up to Carnaval, there
is the opportunity to watch the samba schools as they prepare
and rehearse for the parade. Schools usually rehearse once a
week from Sept/Oct until Carnaval in February. One of the
schools that is right downtown--and just happens to be a
four-time champion--is Vai Vai they usually can be found
practicing every Sunday from 8pm to midnight at Rua Sao Vicente,
276 - Bela Vista. Most rehearsals are open to the public,
for a small fee of R$ 3-10, and are well worth a visit.

The school, which starts in March of 2008
officially, the activities, is the first dedicated to the public
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) of the capital,
although not a new initiative in the country
"There
is a school of samba gay in Belo Horizonte and another in San
Vicente (Baixada Santista), but they do not have the visibility
that we have," says the chairman of the new agremiação, Eduardo
Correa. "We know that there are groups are mobilizing to a
school of samba gay also in Rio de Janeiro," he says.

| The Paulista, accustomed more to arduous
work has what has even been called by pundits the "samba of work.
This is often by Cariocas who might be said to be more devoted
to the lyricism and rhythm of
the samba Rio. Samba paulistano is more influenced by the heavier percussion rhythms, as
the jongo-macumba, aka caxambu. The early Carnival celebrants
did suffer police
repression, samba dancers, not just during Carnival, but throughout the
year, were seen as marginal vagabonds who were to be made to
feel unwelcome. Carnival paulistano is
linked to manufacturing zones of the city where
two of the most traditional of Samba Schools; Vai-Vai and
Camisa Verde e Branco hail from. |

Carnaval celebration and there is no bigger state
in the Americas that Sao Paulo at 42 million inhabitants with
only California close at 37 million. Also like California
the two states are the economic engines around which the
respective ends of the Americas spin, yet they each possess

in the world with choked skies above both Rio-Sao Paulo and San
Francisco-Los Angeles may also share a short term future high
speed rail as the corridors between Sao Paulo

peak following the New Year the Carnaval melodies start to grow
